The difference between porcelain & ceramic tiles.

The difference between porcelain & ceramic tiles.

When looking for floor tiles, you may hear the terms porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles, but what is the difference between these two types of floor tiles? Well, it comes down to how the tiles are made and how this affects their density and durability.

What are ceramic tiles?

Ceramic tiles are made from a mix of base clay (either red, brown or white clay) and various minerals with water. They are softer and less dense than porcelain tiles, which makes ceramic tiles easier to cut and shape. They come in lots of intricate designs, and thanks to their softer nature, are easier to adapt for oddly shaped rooms. Ceramic tiles offer designer freedom with a large range of tile designs, and can be used on both floors and walls.

However, they do come with some drawbacks. For example, ceramic tiles should only be used in interior spaces. Being less dense, they can also crack in low temperatures, and being softer they are best installed in low foot traffic areas. Overall, they are not as watertight or hard wearing as porcelain tiles.

Ceramic tiles are great for interior designed spaces with lots of colours, textures and patterns available. They offer non-slip options and are adaptable for floor or wall use. They are best installed in low foot traffic areas if used for floor tiles – so great for homes but not for industrial spaces. Ceramic tiles also cost less than porcelain tiles, as they are cheaper to make and install.

What are porcelain tiles?

Porcelain tiles are made from a mixture of white clay, fine sand and feldspar (a common mineral in granite) which are fired at very high temperatures. This mix and heat makes the tiles more dense than standard ceramic tiles, resulting in a stronger, more stain resistant and waterproof tile which works well on floors.

Porcelain tiles are great for water prone areas, as well as high foot traffic areas for both residential and industrial buildings. These tiles can also be used outdoors on patios, thanks to their hardwearing nature. They also don’t crack or move due to temperature changes – useful in Tasmania’s unpredictable weather.

However, due to the strength and density of porcelain tiles, they are harder to work with. They can be difficult to cut. This is also why they come in only basic or simple designs, offering less design choice for your bathroom or kitchen. It is also recommended to only use these tiles for flooring.

So overall, porcelain tiles are great for areas that see a lot of foot traffic and water prone areas. They are resistant to scuffing and staining, plus can be used indoors or outdoors. They are somewhat limited in their colour, texture and shape choices and are best for homes wanting simple, hardwearing flooring. They are best avoided in spaces that require tiles to be cut to fit. Porcelain tiles also cost more than ceramic tiles, as they are more expensive to make and install.

So, should I use porcelain or ceramic tiles in my home?

Selecting which tiles to use comes down to what areas of your home you need tiles for.

In the bathroom tiles, when looking to install tiles in a shower or wet room, it is highly recommended to use porcelain tiles as they are nearly completely waterproof. However, you can use ceramic tiles for the rest of the bathroom, especially as they can offer anti-clip options for bathroom floor tiles.

For the kitchen, the choice is up to you. Both ceramic tiles and porcelain tiles work well in kitchen areas, though if you have a lot of foot traffic you may want to choose porcelain floor tiles.

If you have a tight budget, then definitely have a look through the various ceramic tiles available. In general, ceramic tiles work out cheaper than porcelain tiles.

When dealing with high traffic areas, such as hallways or commercial spaces, porcelain tiles are the way to go. They are very hardwearing and will resist scratches and scuffs.

If you are planning any DIY tile work, definitely consider ceramic tiles. Simply because they are easier to work with.
