Rug Tips and Tricks

Rugs come in all shapes and sizes and need to be able to match your space, as well as work in the space functionally.

In this blog, we’re going to cover some areas to get right before finding your perfect rug.

Measure your room and furniture

To help find the best fit for your space, it’s best to be prepared before going to see your local rug dealer, or buying rugs online. There’s nothing worse than getting a rug home and finding out that it doesn’t fit.

To start, measure the width and length of the room if you’re looking for a large rug to help get a baseline of the size you’re after. This helps determine the rough space you’re looking to cover.

Another key area to keep in mind is the things around your rug. As a rough estimate, you should try and keep at least a metre around items like furniture or walls, this allows for some space between items and stops everything from getting crammed into a small area.

If you’re only working with a small area, consider using a rug that will wear well in a high-traffic area.

Choose a rug shape and size to complement your space

Your new rug can have as much personality as you do, or can sink into the background. In the world of rugs, size and shape are everything. Now that you have an idea of the dimensions you’re looking to fill, it’s time to pick a shape.

Just a couple of tips for round rugs, they can help make an area seem larger and can trick the eye into embellishing a space with the right size and colour.

Square rugs or rectangle rugs are great for high-traffic areas, as good rugs with a square profile will age consistently through the years in the same places.

Rugs can be practical or aesthetic

Don’t let anyone tell you how to use a rug. Rugs can be both functional and pretty. When shopping for rugs online, be sure to read reviews to get an indication of how well a rug ages. However, for a host of information, it is greatly advised to visit your local rug store. They will have examples and a wealth of experience with different rug types and can help you find the right rug for you.

For rugs that are going to be in high-traffic areas, make sure to ask about any warranties. This applies especially if you have kids or furry friends tearing through the house. If you visit your rug or carpet expert, they can help you pick a sturdy rug that’s built to last.

Choose a rug that’s that looks ageless

This tip is for those of you that are constantly redecorating and moving things around, pick a good rug that won’t clash with a new look. Rugs can be expensive and are not something that you want to be switching out every six months.

Choose a design that will fit in with any future decorating plans – you don’t want to have to change your new rug every time you decide to redecorate!
