Timber vs Vinyl: Which one should you go for?

So you just bought your dream home but there’s one thing you can’t stand….the floors? When choosing flooring, you want to make sure you’re going to make a decision that you can live with for at least 10-15 years (if not more) because it’s such a huge investment. That’s why we’re here to share with you our thoughts on timber and vinyl flooring. We’ll help you find the best flooring that suits your lifestyle.

Before anything, let’s define what vinyl and timber flooring is.

What is Vinyl Flooring?
Vinyl flooring is a synthetic flooring and one of the most maintenance-free flooring options on the market. It’s normally made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and fiberglass stabilizers for flexibility and durability.

Why SAY YES to vinyl flooring?
Vinyl flooring is 100% water resistant so it can stand all those “oppsie” moments plus they are great for wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. Vinyl flooring is also very durable and easy to clean and maintain making it great for high foot traffic or commercial areas. The best part is they are cheaper than timber floors and your options are endless.

Why SAY NO to vinyl flooring?
It has a shorter life span compared to timber flooring because you cannot sand and polish it to bring it back to life. Vinyl flooring can also emit volatile organic compounds which is a respiratory irritant. It can also be punctured by sharp objects and would be hard to replace because they are glued down. Vinyl flooring can even fade and discolour with excessive UV exposure.

What is Timber Flooring?
Timber flooring is made from natural wood and you can get them in 2 different types: raw and pre-finished. Raw timber flooring is basically less processed timber which then has to be stained and coated once they are installed. Pre-finished timber flooring already comes sanded, stained and coated and is more convenient to install.

Why SAY YES to timber flooring?
Timber flooring is tough and more durable than other floorings with the right maintenance. It is an investment, and it adds value and character to your home. It doesn’t emit any volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It’s quite easy to maintain with just a quick sweep or antistatic mop.

Why SAY NO to timber flooring?
Timber flooring is quite expensive and requires complex installation which will cost you more. Timber flooring also has low water resistance and therefore isn’t recommended to be installed in wet areas.
